Technical Analysis for Crypto Trading: 10 Essential Indicators
Learn to use the 10 most important technical indicators for professional crypto trading. All available on Token Tact.
Why technical analysis is the foundation of crypto trading
Technical analysis is the study of price charts, volume and derived indicators to identify recurring patterns and forecast future price movements. While it cannot predict the future with certainty, it provides a structured, probabilistic framework for making trading decisions — and it is the primary tool used by the vast majority of active crypto traders.
All 10 indicators below are available on the Token Tact platform, configurable across all timeframes from 1-minute to weekly charts.
1. RSI — Relative Strength Index
The RSI measures price momentum on a scale of 0 to 100. Readings above 70 indicate overbought conditions; below 30 indicate oversold. The most powerful RSI signals are divergences: when price makes a new high but RSI does not (bearish divergence), or when price makes a new low but RSI does not (bullish divergence). These divergences frequently precede significant reversals.
2. MACD — Moving Average Convergence Divergence
MACD measures the relationship between two exponential moving averages (typically 12 and 26 periods). When the MACD line crosses above the signal line it generates a buy signal; a cross below generates a sell signal. MACD is most reliable on daily and weekly timeframes for swing traders.
3. Bollinger Bands
Bollinger Bands consist of a 20-period moving average with bands plotted two standard deviations above and below. When price touches the lower band after a prolonged downtrend it can signal a potential bounce. A squeeze — when the bands narrow significantly — often precedes a sharp directional move in either direction.
4. Volume
Volume confirms the conviction behind any price movement. A breakout above resistance on high volume is far more reliable than one on low volume. Declining volume during a rally is a warning sign that the move may be losing momentum. Always check volume before acting on any price signal.
5. EMA — Exponential Moving Average
EMAs weight recent prices more heavily than simple moving averages. The 50-period and 200-period EMAs are the most widely watched. When the 50 EMA crosses above the 200 EMA (golden cross) it is a classic long-term bullish signal. The reverse (death cross) is bearish.
6. Support & Resistance Levels
Support levels are prices at which buying interest has historically been strong enough to halt declines. Resistance levels are prices where selling pressure has historically capped rallies. These horizontal levels are among the most reliable tools in technical analysis and are automatically identified by the Token Tact AI engine.
7. Fibonacci Retracements
Fibonacci retracement levels (23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%) identify potential areas of support or resistance during a pullback within a trend. The 61.8% level — the "golden ratio" — is particularly respected by institutional traders and frequently acts as a turning point in major crypto cycles.
8. VWAP — Volume Weighted Average Price
VWAP is the average price weighted by volume for the trading session. It is the benchmark used by institutional operators. When price is above VWAP the market is generally bullish on that timeframe; below VWAP is bearish. Retests of VWAP after a breakout often provide excellent entry points.
9. ATR — Average True Range
ATR measures market volatility by calculating the average range between high and low over a set period. It is invaluable for sizing stop losses appropriately: a stop placed less than 1 ATR away from entry is almost certain to be hit by normal market noise. Token Tact displays ATR values in real time to help you set intelligent stop levels.
10. On-Chain Indicators (specific to crypto)
Unlike traditional assets, cryptocurrencies allow analysis of blockchain data. Key on-chain metrics include: exchange inflows/outflows (high exchange inflows can signal increased selling pressure), active addresses (a proxy for network adoption), and the MVRV ratio (market value vs realised value — a reliable long-term valuation tool). All available on Token Tact.
